Lately there aren’t too many good horror movies and they force us to look for alternatives to scare us a bit. Today I want to share with you the best anime horror series. I have prepared a list with series of different genres – ghosts, gore, zombies and much more!
Cancel all your appointments, call all your friends, turn off the lights, make popcorn and get ready to shit yourself! They are not sorted by any particular order. Here you have the best horror anime series:
1. Paranoia Agent (Mousou Dairinin)
You’ll like this dark anime if you’re a fan of: Psychological Thriller
The first chapter begins with a designer being pressured to deliver a job and suffering from being blocked. On the way home, she meets an older woman looking through the garbage and who suddenly disappears (never a good sign). From that moment on, strange things begin to happen and the scene ends with a young man on skates beating her to death.
The detectives assigned to the case will soon receive many more calls from similar new cases. And all the victims have one thing in common: they have all felt pressured and burdened with their lives before they died.

The mysterious immortal humans called “Ajin” first appeared 17 years ago in Africa. They were then classified by society as threats to society by their powers. Since then, all Ajin are persecuted by society, to the point of arrest.

Kei Nagai, a boy in high school, knows very little about Ajin. In fact, all he knows is how little he has seen in the news and what they have been told in class. But he will soon discover what an Ajin is and will have to suffer the consequences.

In June 1983, Keiichi Maebara decides to leave his hometown for a rural village called Hinamizawa. He spends most of his time with his school friends and living a quiet life.
But like all small towns, there is a dark secret. Appearances are deceiving. There is a murder in the city and mysterious things begin to happen from then on. He also discovers that his friends at school are not as good as he thought.

5. Corpse Party – Tortured Souls (Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou)

It’s a very short series of four chapters – well loaded with horror scenes! The story begins at Heavenly Host, an elementary school that is closed for all the disappearances and murders of its students and employees.
But after many years, they build another school on top of it.
One night, a group of students meet at the new school to tell scary stories. At first, there is an earthquake and they are transported to another dimension – one in which the old school still exists. The problem is that it is plagued with dead and murderers.

6. Hellsing (Herushingu)

It’s inspired by Van Helsing’s story. It follows the adventures of a vampire named Alucard and his partner Seras Victoria, a police officer turned vampire. They both work for a vampire extermination organization called Hellsing.

7. Tokyo Ghoul

Ken Kaneki, the protagonist of the series, meets a very cute girl named Rize. But this girl is actually a gul. Guls are an improved version of zombies as they are just like humans but they have powers and eat people.
Because of Riz, Ken ends up becoming a hybrid between human and gul. He knows he can’t eat other people, but he needs to feed like a gul. This horror series is a perfect blend of terror, mystery and tragedy.

8. Elfen Lied
You’ll like this horror series if you’re a fan of: Paranormal powers, blood, extra gore, experiments
Lucy is from a race called “Diclonius“, she was born with small horns and telekinetic hands. When the government discovers her, they kidnap her to carry out scientific experiments on her. But after many years, Lucy finally escapes the torture she had to live through.
When she escapes, she is hit very hard on the head, causing multiple personalities: innocent as a little girl and a serial killer.

9. Umineko: When They Cry (Umineko No Naku Koro Ni)
You’ll like this horror anime if you’re a fan of: Paranormal, islands, animals, many characters
They adapted this series from the game “When they cry” and it’s a bit like the sequel to the series I mentioned earlier with the same name in English (Higurashi).
Umineko focuses on Battler Ushiromiya, one of the sons of the multi-million dollar Ushiromiya family. The whole family goes to a deserted island to talk about the inheritance and to decide who will receive what when the father dies. But it goes to shit when a witch appears.

10. Ghost stories (Gakkou no Kaidan)

Also known as “Ghosts at School,” the series tells the story of Satsuki Miyanoshita, who moves with her family to her mother’s city (after she died). On the first day of class, Satsuki’s younger brother, her neighbor, and some new school friends decide to visit an abandoned building. They quickly discover that it is full of ghosts.

You’ll like this horror anime if you’re a fan of: Spirits, exorcisms, vintage terror
It follows a medicine salesman who faces different paranormal threats. The stories unfold during the Edo era of Japan, when there was a four-class system with merchants (including the medicine vendor) forming the lowest class and the samurai the highest.
The medicine vendor does not mind fighting the spirits (Mononoke), sometimes even destroying them completely. In addition, he uses his knowledge of the paranormal world to defend himself from the spirits. But he doesn’t exorcise them until he knows all the details of their reasons.

You’ll like this dark anime if you’re a fan of: Vampires, rural Japan
The story follows Megumi Shimizu, a fifteen-year-old girl who dies unexpectedly in the quiet town of Sotoba, followed by a fierce epidemic and a lot of blood and terror.
Toshio Ozaki, a young doctor, goes in search of the truth and decides to fight with the help of the friend of the deceased, Natsuno Yuuki. Together they will challenge the vampires of the city.

13. Girl from Hell (Jigoku Shoujo) (Also: Hell Girl)
You’ll like this horror anime if you’re a fan of: Japanese mythology, sinister girls, stories of revenge, urban legends, morality
There’s a website you can only visit at midnight. It’s called Hotline to hell and all it has is a black background and a phrase that says something like “I’ll take revenge for you“. If you put a name, that person will be sent straight to hell.
It’s not the most gore anime out there, but it explores people’s darkest thoughts and desires. No one is purely evil and no one is completely innocent.

14. Ghost Hunt
You’ll like this dark anime if you’re a fan of: Ghostbusters, exorcisms, winning over ghosts with the power of religion
Sixteen-year-old Mai is caught to help an organization called “Shibuya Psychic Research” after one of her devices was charged.
There are cures, exorcisms, mediums… Each hunt lasts between two or three chapters, so if you are looking for shorter series, this one is not for you.

15. Yami Shibai
You’ll like this horror anime if you’re a fan of: Japanese horror movies, special animation, sinister ghosts
This anime is not like the ones we’re used to. It is animated as if they were paper puppets, very traditional in Japan. Each chapter of Yami Shibai tells a different story of Japanese urban legends or sinister myths.

Sometimes it’s not paranormal monsters or ghosts that scare you the most, but real people. Dr. Kenzou Tenma is a Japanese surgeon working in Europe. He is very much appreciated in his sector, he has a very beautiful fiancée and they are about to promote him. But everything changes when he encounters a big dilemma – saving the life of a small child or the life of the mayor of the city.
Even though he was pressured to save the mayor, his morality obliges him to save the child. The bad news is that he discovers that the child may be responsible for something horrible.
